Colorful Thursdays: Analogous themes

Last week we talked about using colors that are opposite from each other (complimentary colors). This week, we’ll focus on analogous colors – colors that are next to each other on the wheel. These are also known as “harmonious” colors, and let me show you why:

In this image, there are lots of bright blues and bright greens. If you find where most of the colors lie on the above color wheel, they’re somewhere between yellow-green and blue – that’s why they feel so harmonious in the picture. This covers a wider range of colors, yet they all sit next to each other on the wheel.

In this image, there are lots of orange tones and yellow tones (and little hints of red). Orange and yellow sit next to each other on the wheel, and this image uses a very soothing range of those colors. This is typically why a more sepia-toned image feels more soothing.

When planning your wedding, think about the colors that are analogous to your main wedding color. While last week we talked about how using complimentary colors can neutralize each other, the analogous colors are a less-used way to bring some harmony to a color scheme. If you have a pretty monotone look, consider using an analogous color rather than a complimentary color to shake things up.

And now for a mix of last week and this week. Notice that the reds and yellows create a nice harmony, and the light green adds a bold surprise in the little places it appears:
